VersaHandler Owner Saves Money, Gets More Machine

Tim Crump

Tim Crump, owner of Superior Surfaces, uses his V518 for a variety of jobs, including grading.

Less money. More machine. That’s a rare combination and that’s why Tim Crump says his V518 VersaHandler® telescopic tool carrier (TTC) is “a great piece of equipment.”

Crump owns Superior Surfaces of Charleston (SC), an eight-year-old company that specializes in stone— both vertical and flatwork—and interlocking concrete pavers. The commercial and residential work done by the firm includes floors, fireplaces, wall veneers, porches, patios, walks, driveways, entries, parking lots, pool decks and retaining walls.

Up until about a year-and-a-half ago Crump had been renting another brand of lift and carry machine. He and his accountant added up the rental bills and decided it would be more economical to purchase a unit to do the work.
“One day I drove by the Bobcat of Charleston store and saw a VersaHandler machine parked out front,” says Crump. “I had not owned any Bobcat® products and was surprised to discover they had a telescopic tool carrier.”

Friends had told him Bobcat equipment was the best in the business and, after trying the V518, Crump agreed.

“Compared to what I had been renting, the Bobcat telescopic not only cost less, but it could do more,” he says. “It made sense to buy it. It’s a whole lot better machine that’s great for moving materials, and for excavating and grading.”

The lifting, carrying and placing ability of the VersaHandler V518 is ideal for Superior Surfaces. Crews take it to every commercial job.

“It does a great job,” says Crump. “Many of the expensive homes where we work are on the water and, as a result, they are built up 8 to 10 ft. off the ground. We need a highly maneuverable machine to lift material up onto the porch. The VersaHandler TTC fits the bill perfectly.”

Other reasons the V518 is rated so high by Crump and his crews:

  • “We use it in four-wheel steer so it doesn’t tear up the ground like some other units we have used,” he says.
  • “The full yard bucket is great; it allows us to move sand very quickly.”
  • “The enclosed cab with air conditioning is wonderful during our very hot South Carolina summers.”
  • “On a construction site with a busy street I can unload an 18-wheeler without having to switch sides of the truck,” says Harold “Bubba” McLeod, Superior Surfaces Versa-Handler TTC operator. “I just extend the boom to handle the entire load. The truck drivers really appreciate not having to maneuver around.”
  • “We can lock up the V518 and leave it at a jobsite overnight,” says McLeod. “It’s reassuring to know it will be there the next day.” Concludes Crump: “All-in-all I couldn’t be happier with an equipment purchase.”
