Growing a Business the Bobcat Way
Jeff Alley
Enjoy what you do. Set yourself apart from the competition. Do your work well. Make the most of your time and money. Be dependable.
These are the characteristics that helped J&M Construction Company, Inc., grow. Jeff Alley and his wife, Margie, established their business in Summerfield, N.C., three years ago.
These are also the traits of the Bobcat® equipment line that played an important role in the Alleys’ success—an S250, a 773, seven 873 skid-steer loaders and a 331 excavator, all purchased from Piedmont Bobcat in Kernersville, N.C.
“We couldn’t have grown the way we have if we weren’t doing good work,” Jeff says. “Having good, reliable equipment like our Bobcat machines has absolutely helped us do that.”
The Alleys and their 45 employees provide grading and concrete construction services, along with home building and commercial renovation projects. Monolithic slabs, instead of conventional brick and block concrete work, are the company’s specialty. Pouring footings and slabs for houses, garages and porches at one time can cut up to a week off the total home construction schedule, says Jeff. Coloring and stamping patterns into the fresh concrete also provides an attractive appearance.
Experienced Operator
Jeff, who grew up working with his father in the concrete business, has many years of experience with skidsteer loaders.
“When Margie and I started our company we knew we wouldn’t use any other brand than Bobcat,” he says.
The loaders are used with a Bobcat dozer blade and tooth buckets, including two low-profile models for cutting out basements, patios, driveways and sidewalks and other site preparation work.
“The loaders spend about 60 percent of the day grading and the lowprofile design makes it a lot easier to see your work,” Jeff says.
The Alleys also rent other Bobcat attachments such as the hydraulic breaker for demolition chores and the Brushcat® rotary cutter for clearing new home lots.
The 331 excavator, used with 13-and 16-in.-wide trenching buckets, saves a lot of labor and headaches digging footings. Jeff likes the size, speed and ease of using this machine since most of the jobs involve cramped work areas.
Top-notch performance isn’t the only feature that has confirmed the wisdom of the Alleys’ decision to invest in Bobcat equipment.
“We’ve had no serious problems with our loaders or excavator,” Jeff says. “Running as many machines as we do, that says a lot. Our Bobcat equipment allows us to keep our costs reasonable and to give customers full value for their money.”
