Toolcat 5600 Goes Camping

For campground owners who want to do their own maintenance and improvements, it's just a matter of using the right equipment, according to Chuck Haines.

He's the owner of Shady Creek RV Park & Campground, Monroe, Mich. And for him the right equipment includes a Toolcat™ 5600 utility work machine.

"I originally purchased the unit from Bobcat of Toledo to plow snow and clean fire pits around my 46-acre campground," says Haines. "With 100 lots to maintain and the fact we are open the year-round, it seemed like I would be able to keep the utility work machine busy.

"However, I soon discovered that there was no end to the type of work we could do with the 5600. We use it for hauling firewood, fertilizer, plants and picnic tables to different places around the campground. With the pallet forks on the front of the machine, you can see what you're doing when loading materials. With tractors, you can't."

Haines points out that the Toolcat 5600 has made him more multi-functional because, in addition to using the machine to drill a hole for planting a tree, he can also carry the tree and other supplies needed to complete the job in the 2,000-lb. cargo box.

Chuck Haines keeps his Toolcat 5600 busy around his campgrounds.

"Keeping the lawns looking neat, clean and rut-free is important," says Haines. "The all-wheel steering of the 5600 enables me to travel into confined areas while exerting minimal ground disturbance. It is so lawn-friendly that at times I use it like a golf cart to monitor activities around the grounds."

Buy Equipment, Save Money

When Chuck Haines decided to do a complete landscaping overhaul at his Shady Creek RV Park and Campground, he solicited bids from landscaping contractors. When he saw an estimated cost of around $400,000, he decided to do the work himself.

"I purchased a Bobcat® T190 compact track loader, a 430 excavator and several attachments, and saved about $300,000," says Haines. "With our attachments—box scraper, Tilt-Tatch, dumping hopper, auger and buckets—we were able to do all the landscaping. It took some time, but I saved money and was able to use the equipment for other maintenance projects that I would have to sub-contract."
