Spanish Language Training Helps Landscaping Company
Alfonso Mendez
Sun City Landscape uses the Spanish language Bobcat® skid-steer loader training course for both initial and annual refresher training for about 60 primary and backup operators.
Alfonso Mendez, safety manager of the Las Vegas firm, has directed the training for the past two years. The course, which features a Spanish language video and handbook, includes classroom instruction and hands-on operation of loaders.
Operators view the video and then discuss the training points using the handbook. Mendez adds a quiz to identify any topics that require additional instruction.
"People seem to learn better if they can see and read about a subject," he says. "The handbook and video go hand-in-hand, reinforcing each other.
"This course helps improve operator productivity. By explaining how to operate and maintain the equipment, it gives new operators a better perspective of what they will be doing on the job. And it helps remind experienced operators of something they may be overlooking."
In some cases, he adds, operators may take the Bobcat course for re-training as needed.
"We're happy with the effectiveness of the Bobcat training materials," Mendez says.
Also, he points out, it makes his job much easier. "Without the Spanish language version I would have to translate the material," he says. "This course saves me a lot of time."
